Does my child need speech and/or language therapy?
Here are some frequently asked questions:
Why isn’t my child speaking yet?
Many reasons can explain why a young child isn't speaking yet, and each child grows at their own speed. Factors affecting speech development might include hearing issues, speech disorders, or a lack of chances to talk. Some children may also prioritize learning other skills, like movement or socializing, before they begin to speak. If you're worried about your child's speech progress, talking to a speech-language pathologist can offer helpful advice and support based on your child's specific needs.
Adults can’t understand my child, what should he/she be saying?
Children who are in the process of mastering articulation may produce unclear speech sounds, resulting in confusion for their listeners. Additionally, speaking rapidly can obscure the intended meaning, and in the absence of context, adults may struggle to interpret the message accurately. By implementing effective communication strategies, we can create an environment that not only supports but also values the voices of children, ensuring that they feel heard and understood.
My child’s teacher says he/she is struggling in reading and writing, why is that?
Many children struggle with reading and writing for a variety of complex reasons. These challenges can include difficulty recognizing and effectively using sounds in words, as well as problems connecting individual letters to their corresponding sounds. Additionally, language processing disorders can significantly hinder a child’s ability to both comprehend and express thoughts and ideas clearly. Other contributing factors may include a limited vocabulary, attention-related issues, and emotional obstacles such as anxiety or low self-esteem that can further impede progress.
